Stacking 12V Batteries to 48V

I posted a similar question in another area and thought I should put it here. Here’s the story, I bought a comprehensive charger/inverter system. The internal charge controller operates at 48 volts, and the inverter operates at 48 volts as well. I’m looking to save a significant amount of money on batteries and found that connecting four 12-volt batteries in series is much cheaper than buying a single 48-volt battery. All four batteries would be lithium, and the brand would be a lower-cost brand, like Chinese brands or something similar. The four stacked 12-volt batteries produce the same amount of energy (watt-hours) as a single 48-volt battery and save me $1000 to $2000 in the process.

Here’s my question. Is it acceptable to charge the two 12-volt batteries in series using the 48-volt charge controller?

Someone who responded to the other post said, “the maximum of 51.2 volts doesn’t make sense for a 48-volt system since that would be 12.8 volts per battery or 3.2 volts per cell, which is not enough to charge the battery. That would be the voltage midpoint of nominal state of charge. The maximum for full charge would be 16 x 3.65 volts = 58.4 volts DC.” I appreciate their response but feel confused by it. Can someone help me understand what I might be missing?

Thank you all very much for your help!
