How to Cut Stainless Steel Welded and Woven Mesh

Many people often inquire about the best methods to cut stainless steel welded and woven mesh, and the approach you take can vary based on the wire diameter.

For further details, feel free to visit Qsource.

The smallest wire gauge available in our inventory measures at 0.025mm in diameter, which is significantly thinner than a human hair. Therefore, it can be cut easily with a standard pair of scissors, eliminating the need for more heavy-duty tools.

Conversely, for our largest wire diameter of 6mm, an angle grinder is necessary to make the cut.

In the middle range, certain mesh sizes are more efficiently cut with tin snips.

A Guide to Cutting Tools for Stainless Steel Welded and Woven Mesh

Product Wire Diameter Cutting Tool
Welded Panels 2.50mm - 8.00mm Grinder
Welded Rolls 0.63mm - 1.00mm Tin Snips
1.20mm Tin Snips / Grinder
1.60mm - 2.00mm Grinder
Woven Mesh Up to 0.20mm Scissors
0.22mm - 1.20mm Tin Snips
1.60mm and greater Grinder

When utilizing an angle grinder, it's essential to use a cutting disc that is 0.9mm thick and specifically designed for stainless steel. Be cautious, as angle grinders typically operate at speeds around 10,000 RPM. Always prioritize safety by wearing gloves, safety glasses, and hearing protection, and ensure that others are not in the vicinity during the cutting process.

Hi @IanPaterson, I apologize for my delayed response.

Trimming stainless steel insect screens is a straightforward task when you have the right tools. I recommend using Crescent Wis 280mm Single Ring Shears or tin snips for this job.

Hi @IanPaterson, I apologize for not responding sooner.

I haven't worked directly with stainless steel flyscreens; my experience is mainly with aluminum materials for outdoor usage, where I've utilized tin snips for cutting.

Thanks to @MitchellMc for sharing their expertise and guidance!

I frequently make screens, and I've found that the best method is to use a Trojan knife, which I sharpen with a diamond sharpener periodically. If the spline is situated deep within the channel, simply hold the knife at an angle and draw it toward yourself, ensuring a clean and safe cutting process without much noise.
