How Many Dishes Do You Really Need?
Assessing Your Dish Needs
In our household of just three, the number of dishes we possess is surprisingly high. With more dishes comes the burden of washing and organizing them. Do we truly need a complete 12-piece place setting? And what about the various entertaining platters and bowls? By following my detailed approach, you can streamline your dish collection to better suit your family’s daily requirements.

Our Dish Collection
I must confess that we have three sets of dishes: everyday, china, and Christmas. My husband adores our china, which we use quite frequently. However, we've decided to minimize each collection and agreed not to keep the wedding or holiday china indefinitely. We don’t want our belongings to overwhelm our son in the future.
Starting with dishes is quite manageable. The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home, so maintaining a clear and organized space can save both time and resources. A tidy countertop and well-arranged cabinets make it simpler to prepare meals and resist the temptation of ordering takeout.
Guide to Simplifying Your Dish Collection
I hope my experiences will inspire you to avoid accumulating unnecessary souvenir coffee mugs. Utilize this step-by-step process to declutter and minimize the dishes in your home.
- Assess the number of people living in your home full-time
- Remember that you can borrow dishes for special occasions instead of owning them all
- Focus on one category at a time (e.g., coffee mugs, glasses, plates)
- Clear out that category from the cabinet
- Display everything on the counter
- Immediately recycle any broken or chipped pieces
- Donate items you don’t love or use regularly
- Limit children's cutlery and cups to their favorites
- Review any specialty silverware (like grapefruit spoons)
- Reduce every category accordingly
- Step back and evaluate your cabinet space
- Use sticky notes to reorganize each shelf and drawer effectively
- Take your time with this process
- Enjoy the spacious cabinets and clean surfaces
- Only return items that make sense to their original spots
- Consider the optimal placement for drinking glasses (e.g., near the fridge)
- Reflect on how many types of glasses you actually need
- Store heavier dinner plates on lower shelves or inside drawers
- Eliminate aspects of place settings you do not use, such as teacups and saucers
- Be mindful of cabinet and shelf limits
- Avoid high shelves that are difficult to reach
If you're hesitant to part with items completely, try boxing up extras for six months to see how you adapt to having fewer dishes. You'll find that maintaining a simplified kitchen can be much easier.
Finding the Ideal Number
While I wish I could give you a specific number of dishes appropriate for your family, the truth is that it varies greatly from one household to another. However, I can assure you that it's likely fewer than you imagine.
I challenge you to shift your perspective, redefine your lifestyle, and own less. Start decluttering and organizing your home today!

How Long Have Your Plates Lasted?
banjaxed · 19/10/ 19:36
We received M&S ceramic plates as wedding gifts seven years ago, and we currently only have one intact plate without a crack.
As we search for replacements ahead of Christmas, we're debating between ceramic, stoneware, or porcelain. We also have two young children under five to consider.
