We provide an overview and comparison of the leading domestic and international diesel engine brands to serve as a reference for users.

Domestic Diesel Engine Brands in China

1. Shanghai Diesel Engine (SDEC)

Shanghai Diesel Engine Co., Ltd. (SDEC) primarily produces 50-500 kW generator sets. As one of the oldest diesel engine brands in China, SDEC has been recognized for its good performance and reliable after-sales service. In recent years, after being incorporated into SAIC, its market position has improved, especially with the introduction of new energy diesel engines.

2. Weichai Power

Weichai Power produces generator sets ranging from 25 to kW. It is known for good performance, affordability, and easy maintenance, making it one of the most popular choices in the market. However, only Weichai’s main factory (Weichai Power Co., Ltd.) produces high-quality engines, while numerous small-scale manufacturers imitate older designs. These imitation products often have higher failure rates, making it crucial to distinguish between genuine and counterfeit Weichai products.

3. Yuchai Machinery

Yuchai primarily produces diesel engines in the 50- kW range and is a leader among emerging domestic brands. Its products are known for stability, reliability, and fuel efficiency, with most models meeting China’s National Stage III emission standards. However, Yuchai’s prices are among the highest for domestic brands.

4. CNPC Jichai

Jichai specializes in high-power diesel engines ranging from 500 to kW, widely used in oil fields, drilling, and exploration industries. The brand is recognized for its stable performance and suitability for high-power applications.

5. Other Domestic Brands

Brands like Dongfeng Research Institute, Kaipu, Juyou, and Kadejie mainly produce engines modeled after SDEC designs. Their products, typically ranging from 75 to kW, have relatively lower quality and higher fuel consumption. These are best suited for budget-conscious buyers.

International and Joint Venture Diesel Engine Brands

1. Cummins

Cummins, founded in the USA, is a global leader in diesel engine technology. In China, Cummins generator sets are primarily manufactured by Dongfeng Cummins and Chongqing Cummins, covering a power range of 25- kW. These engines are compact, lightweight, powerful, and durable, with a globally extensive after-sales service network. While Cummins engines have higher spare parts costs and noise levels, they offer an excellent overall cost-performance ratio.

2. Volvo Penta

Volvo Penta diesel engines, manufactured by Sweden’s Volvo Group, are commonly paired with Siemens generators. They are widely recognized for their reliability, environmental friendliness, low noise, and excellent high-altitude adaptability. However, due to their expensive spare parts, Volvo generator sets are mainly used in large-scale oil fields and government procurement projects.

3. Doosan (Daewoo)

FAWDE contains other products and information you need, so please check it out.

South Korea’s Doosan engines, produced since , range from 64 to 600 kW. They are globally acknowledged for their compact size, lightweight design, strong load-bearing capability, and low noise. Despite their excellent performance, obtaining spare parts can be more challenging compared to other brands.

4. Perkins

Perkins, a British brand under Caterpillar, specializes in engines ranging from 10 to kW. Known for their fuel efficiency and smooth operation, Perkins engines are widely used in industrial, construction, and backup power applications. However, their spare parts and maintenance costs are relatively high, making them more suitable for users with long-term operational considerations.

5. Other Imported Brands

Other notable imported brands include Mitsubishi (Japan), Deutz (Germany), Caterpillar (USA), and Iveco (Italy). While these brands have a presence in specific markets, their overall market share is relatively smaller.

Major Brand Comparison Summary

Generator Brand Selection

The generator (alternator) is a critical component of a diesel generator set, affecting overall efficiency and lifespan. The three leading generator brands are:

  • Stamford (UK): A globally renowned brand, standard in Cummins generator sets, offering excellent quality but at a higher price.
  • Leroy-Somer (France): Known for its high cost-performance ratio and reliable performance.
  • Marathon (USA): Offers excellent quality at a mid-range price, making it an ideal choice for many applications.

The official domestic production sites for these brands are:

  • Stamford: Wuxi, China
  • Leroy-Somer: Fuzhou, China
  • Marathon: Shanghai, China

Buyers should be cautious of counterfeit products in the market to ensure stability and longevity.

Conclusion

When selecting a diesel generator set, it is essential to consider factors such as brand quality, price, after-sales service, fuel efficiency, and spare parts availability.

  • For cost-effective solutions: Domestic brands like Weichai and Cummins (produced in China) are ideal.
  • For high-end applications: Volvo, Doosan, and Perkins are suitable for environments with strict performance and environmental requirements.
  • For general industrial use: Domestic brands like SDEC and Yuchai provide reliable options.

Regarding generators, Stamford, Leroy-Somer, and Marathon remain the top choices. Ultimately, choosing the right diesel generator set brand and configuration based on specific application needs ensures stable operation and long-term cost efficiency.

Posts: 3,421 Re: Chinese Diesel Engines Ive been called a few times down the bayou to check out some Genny set ups at both commerical outfits and homes. All these units were china made. To start with the noise of all these units were just plain LOUD! this we could and did take care of. But the leaks of both oil and water were a little harder because of lousy gaskets that were just not right ! But even that I was able to cure with a little hand work. but after about 10 hours of running time, major problems started to show up ! The first one was a commerical unit of about 25 KW with a tossed rod through a hole in the thin block. On takeing it apart to see the cause of the problem I found a handful of iron and steel shaveings thruout the bottom end ! and some really thin cross section piston rods! and the pistons looked like something made in a high school machine shop !! The rings were all cast iron and even the oil control rings were so widely gapped I don't see how they ever worked at all !! Im just saying, when it comes to Cheap Chinee diesel engines, no matter the use of them marine or fixed mount if ya buy cheap ya get real cheap !! Just my 2 cents and Ive been fixing diesels for over 40 years ! __________________

The Rocna anchors had a lower strength steel because Rocna told them to use that steel instead of the originally specified stronger steel. How people can insist on repeating that false info is beyond comprehension. I worked for Honeywell in an iso plant in Canada. What a joke. The
standard has little to do with output, or quality.

China is big. Really big. Generalizing that doesn't work well. Quality is available, if you're willing to find it. The manufacturing qc I've seen in Canada is pretty laughable too.

Honda engine blocks for certain markets are made there and just fine. Qc and price are not independent.

Also was just digging for a 150hp for a re power. Found that some Cummins diesels come from China too... always in motion is the future

The problem is that too many want cheap. Cheap, cheap, cheap, I go nuts about people wanting cheap and the manufacturers obliging by creating cheap Bleep! We should quit that and buy quality. If we don't have enough $$$ then we should buy less, not cheaper.

There are good products from China, but they are not cheap like the cr@p they also sell because the buyers prefer that. __________________

Posts: 13,520 Chinese diesel gensets friends have bought here in Guatemala have proven to be noisy junk too.

However, as shown by the prevelance of "made in China" tags on many major good quality brands of other types of goods the Chinese are capable of producing good stuff too. Hopefully market pressures will force them to follow suit on their engines.

I think good quality better priced product would put some much needed competative pressure on other brands like Volvo....they want $280US for a small front crankshaft pulley for a 20HP engine...thats just insane!

Competition is good -- it forces all players to raise the bar. And now we have global competition and exchange of goods like never before in human history...interesting and good I think.
